TITLE: UMS USTEM
LOCATION: Urbana Middle School
SUPERVISOR: Principal/Assistant Principal
JOB SUMMARY: The Urbana Middle School USTEM Teacher organizes and facilitates students during an after-school enrichment program. The USTEM program is designed for curious, interested, and motivated UMS students in math and science subjects and places special emphasis on enrolling students who are historically underrepresented in those areas. The two main goals of USTEM are to maintain or increase student interest, engagement, and development in science and mathematics; and to increase access to programming for students who historically have limited resources and experiences in science, math, and technology.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Advocates for students and is committed to STEM, including support for equity and access for all students.
- Creates a student application and recruiting plan to select student participants based on set criteria, teacher recommendations, and student applications. Intentionally recruits students who have been historically underrepresented in STEM areas.
- Facilitates after-school weekly meetings for students.
- Designs inquiry-based curriculum and learning experiences for students to engage in mathematical thinking and experiential scientific thinking.
- Collaborates with the University of Illinois outreach groups to promote exposure to college scientists and to current science research.
- Arranges and plan for field trips, including the University of Illinois Engineering Open House and other experiential learning opportunities.
- Manages a budget and spending account for the program, including organizing fundraising opportunities.
- Collaborates with the UMS SPLASH program coordinator to host USTEM through SPLASH session offerings in order to provide transportation and meals to student participants.
- Monitors the academic performance of USTEM members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met; and encourages students to maintain a high academic standard.
- To perform any and all additional duties as assigned by UMS Administration.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary is based on a stipend determined through the Urbana School District #116 and UEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated by the current supervisor, Principal/Assistant Principal
